Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom crossed the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.

Absalom put Amasa in command of the army in place of Joab. Now Amasa was the son of a man whose name was Ithra the Israelite, who had relations with Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister of Zeruiah, Joab’s mother.

And Israel and Absalom camped in the land of Gilead.

27

Now when David had come to Mahanaim, Shobi the son of Nahash from Rabbah of the sons of Ammon, Machir the son of Ammiel from Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim,

28

brought beds, basins, pottery, wheat, barley, flour, roasted grain, beans, lentils, roasted seeds,

29

honey, curds, sheep, and cheese of the herd, for David and the people who were with him, to eat. For they said, “The people are hungry and exhausted and thirsty in the wilderness.”

Then David took a count of the people who were with him and appointed over them commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds.

And David sent the people out, a third under the command of Joab, a third under the command of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third under the command of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the people, “I myself will certainly go out with you also.”

3

But the people said, “You should not go out; for if in fact we flee, they will not care about us; and if half of us die, they will not care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us; so now it is better that you will be ready to help us from the city.”

Then the king said to them, “Whatever seems best to you I will do.” So the king stood beside the gate, and all the people went out by hundreds and thousands.

But the king commanded Joab, Abishai, and Ittai, saying, “Deal gently with the young man Absalom for my sake.” And all the people heard when the king commanded all the commanders regarding Absalom.

6

Then the people went out to the field against Israel, and the battle took place in the forest of Ephraim.

7

The people of Israel were defeated there by the servants of David, and the slaughter there that day was great, twenty thousand men.

8

For the battle there was spread over the whole countryside, and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

이에 다윗은 마하나임에 이르고 압살롬은 모든 이스라엘 사람과 함께 요단을 건너니라

압살롬이 아마사로 요압을 대신하여 군지휘관으로 삼으니라 아마사는 이스라엘 사람 이드라라 하는 자의 아들이라 이드라가 나하스의 딸 아비갈과 동침하여 그를 낳았으며 아비갈은 요압의 어머니 스루야의 동생이더라

이에 이스라엘 무리와 압살롬이 길르앗 땅에 진 치니라

다윗이 마하나임에 이르렀을 때에 암몬 족속에게 속한 랍바 사람 나하스의 아들 소비와 로데발 사람 암미엘의 아들 마길과 로글림 길르앗 사람 바르실래가

Now when David had come to Mahanaim, Shobi the son of Nahash from Rabbah of the sons of Ammon, Machir the son of Ammiel from Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim,

침상과 대야와 질그릇과 밀과 보리와 밀가루와 볶은 곡식과 콩과 팥과 볶은 녹두와

꿀과 버터와 양과 치즈를 가져다가 다윗과 그와 함께 한 백성에게 먹게 하였으니 이는 그들 생각에 백성이 들에서 시장하고 곤하고 목마르겠다 함이더라

이에 다윗이 그와 함께 한 백성을 찾아가서 천부장과 백부장을 그들 위에 세우고

다윗이 그의 백성을 내보낼새 삼분의 일은 요압의 휘하에, 삼분의 일은 스루야의 아들 요압의 동생 아비새의 휘하에 넘기고 삼분의 일은 가드 사람 잇대의 휘하에 넘기고 왕이 백성에게 이르되 나도 반드시 너희와 함께 나가리라 하니

백성들이 이르되 왕은 나가지 마소서 우리가 도망할지라도 그들은 우리에게 마음을 쓰지 아니할 터이요 우리가 절반이나 죽을지라도 우리에게 마음을 쓰지 아니할 터이라 왕은 우리 만 명보다 중하시오니 왕은 성읍에 계시다가 우리를 도우심이 좋으니이다 하니라

왕이 그들에게 이르되 너희가 좋게 여기는 대로 내가 행하리라 하고 문 곁에 왕이 서매 모든 백성이 백 명씩 천 명씩 대를 지어 나가는지라

왕이 요압과 아비새와 잇대에게 명령하여 이르되 나를 위하여 젊은 압살롬을 너그러이 대우하라 하니 왕이 압살롬을 위하여 모든 군지휘관에게 명령할 때에 백성들이 다 들으니라

이에 백성이 이스라엘을 치러 들로 나가서 에브라임 수풀에서 싸우더니

거기서 이스라엘 백성이 다윗의 부하들에게 패하매 그 날 그 곳에서 전사자가 많아 이만 명에 이르렀고

그 땅에서 사면으로 퍼져 싸웠으므로 그 날에 수풀에서 죽은 자가 칼에 죽은 자보다 많았더라
