Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart was drawn toward Absalom.

So Joab sent a messenger to Tekoa and brought a wise woman from there, and said to her, “Please follow mourning rites, and put on mourning garments now, and do not anoint yourself with oil but be like a woman who has been mourning for the dead for many days.

Then go to the king and speak to him in this way.” So Joab put the words in her mouth.

Now when the woman of Tekoa spoke to the king, she fell on her face to the ground and prostrated herself, and said, “Help, O king!”

And the king said to her, “What is troubling you?” And she answered, “Truly I am a widow, for my husband is dead.

And your servant had two sons, but the two of them fought in the field, and there was no one to save them from each other, so one struck the other and killed him.

Now behold, the entire family has risen against your servant, and they have said, ‘Hand over the one who struck his brother, so that we may put him to death for the life of his brother whom he killed, and eliminate the heir as well.’ So they will extinguish my coal which is left, so as to leave my husband neither name nor remnant on the face of the earth.”

Then the king said to the woman, “Go to your home, and I will issue orders concerning you.”

The woman of Tekoa said to the king, “My lord, the king, the guilt is on me and my father’s house, but the king and his throne are guiltless.”

So the king said, “Whoever speaks to you, bring him to me, and he will not touch you anymore.”

Then she said, “May the king please remember the Lord your God, so that the avenger of blood will not continue to destroy, otherwise they will destroy my son.” And he said, “As the Lord lives, not one hair of your son shall fall to the ground.”

드고아에 사람을 보내 거기서 지혜로운 여인 하나를 데려다가 그에게 이르되 청하건대 너는 상주가 된 것처럼 상복을 입고 기름을 바르지 말고 죽은 사람을 위하여 오래 슬퍼하는 여인 같이 하고

왕께 들어가서 그에게 이러이러하게 말하라고 요압이 그의 입에 할 말을 넣어 주니라

드고아 여인이 왕께 아뢸 때에 얼굴을 땅에 대고 엎드려 이르되 왕이여 도우소서 하니

왕이 그에게 이르되 무슨 일이냐 하니라 대답하되 나는 진정으로 과부니이다 남편은 죽고

이 여종에게 아들 둘이 있더니 그들이 들에서 싸우나 그들을 말리는 사람이 아무도 없으므로 한 아이가 다른 아이를 쳐죽인지라

왕이 여인에게 이르되 네 집으로 가라 내가 너를 위하여 명령을 내리리라 하는지라

Then the king said to the woman, “Go to your home, and I will issue orders concerning you.”

드고아 여인이 왕께 아뢰되 내 주 왕이여 그 죄는 나와 내 아버지의 집으로 돌릴 것이니 왕과 왕위는 허물이 없으리이다

왕이 이르되 누구든지 네게 말하는 자를 내게로 데려오라 그가 다시는 너를 건드리지도 못하리라 하니라

여인이 이르되 청하건대 왕은 왕의 하나님 여호와를 기억하사 원수 갚는 자가 더 죽이지 못하게 하옵소서 내 아들을 죽일까 두렵나이다 하니 왕이 이르되 여호와께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 네 아들의 머리카락 하나도 땅에 떨어지지 아니하리라 하니라

Then she said, “May the king please remember the Lord your God, so that the avenger of blood will not continue to destroy, otherwise they will destroy my son.” And he said, “As the Lord lives, not one hair of your son shall fall to the ground.”
