Then Hushai said to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, “This is what Ahithophel advised Absalom and the elders of Israel to do, and this is what I have advised.

Now then, send a messenger quickly and tell David, saying, ‘Do not spend the night at the river crossing places of the wilderness, but by all means cross over, or else the king and all the people who are with him will be destroyed.’”

Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying at En-rogel, and a female servant would go and inform them, and they would go and inform King David, for they could not allow themselves to be seen entering the city.

But a boy did see them, and he told Absalom; so the two of them left quickly and came to the house of a man in Bahurim, who had a well in his courtyard, and they went down into it.

And the woman took a cover and spread it over the well’s mouth and scattered barley meal on it, so that nothing was known.

Then Absalom’s servants came to the woman at the house and said, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?” And the woman said to them, “They have crossed the brook of water.” And when they searched and did not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.

It came about after they had departed, that they came up out of the well and went and reported to King David; and they said to David, “Set out and cross over the water quickly, because this is what Ahithophel has advised against you.”

Then David and all the people who were with him set out and crossed the Jordan; by dawn not even one remained who had not crossed the Jordan.

Now when Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out and went to his home, to his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; so he died and was buried in his father’s grave.

이에 후새가 사독과 아비아달 두 제사장에게 이르되 아히도벨이 압살롬과 이스라엘 장로들에게 이러이러하게 계략을 세웠고 나도 이러이러하게 계략을 세웠으니

이제 너희는 빨리 사람을 보내 다윗에게 전하기를 오늘밤에 광야 나루터에서 자지 말고 아무쪼록 건너가소서 하라 혹시 왕과 그를 따르는 모든 백성이 몰사할까 하노라 하니라

그 때에 요나단과 아히마아스가 사람이 볼까 두려워하여 감히 성에 들어가지 못하고 에느로겔 가에 머물고 어떤 여종은 그들에게 나와서 말하고 그들은 가서 다윗 왕에게 알리더니

한 청년이 그들을 보고 압살롬에게 알린지라 그 두 사람이 빨리 달려서 바후림 어떤 사람의 집으로 들어가서 그의 뜰에 있는 우물 속으로 내려가니

그 집 여인이 덮을 것을 가져다가 우물 아귀를 덮고 찧은 곡식을 그 위에 널매 전혀 알지 못하더라

압살롬의 종들이 그 집에 와서 여인에게 묻되 아히마아스와 요나단이 어디 있느냐 하니 여인이 그들에게 이르되 그들이 시내를 건너가더라 하니 그들이 찾아도 만나지 못하고 예루살렘으로 돌아가니라

그들이 간 후에 두 사람이 우물에서 올라와서 다윗 왕에게 가서 다윗 왕에게 말하여 이르되 당신들은 일어나 빨리 물을 건너가소서 아히도벨이 당신들을 해하려고 이러이러하게 계략을 세웠나이다

다윗이 일어나 모든 백성과 함께 요단을 건널새 새벽까지 한 사람도 요단을 건너지 못한 자가 없었더라

아히도벨이 자기 계략이 시행되지 못함을 보고 나귀에 안장을 지우고 일어나 고향으로 돌아가 자기 집에 이르러 집을 정리하고 스스로 목매어 죽으매 그의 조상의 묘에 장사되니라
